After seeing Nine, the musical that opened August 4, 2016 at the Underground, I am thoroughly convinced every woman on the planet should have a tambourine.
“If he shall play Hyde, then I shall play seek…”
Announcing the cast of The Underground’s first show of the 2016-2016 season, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Are you ready?
That the first performance of Some Sneaky Sheep and Other Tales was sold out Saturday afternoon at the Underground was undoubtedly due in large part to the popularity of local cartoonist, illustrator and author Chris Monroe and her children’s books.
That being said, the Theatre for Young Audiences deserves an equal share of the credit for bringing the silly antics in Monroe’s stories to life with creativity, energy and a whole lotta fun.
Thank you so much to the enthusiastic crowd that came out to the Underground yesterday afternoon to celebrate the Playhouse and hear what’s coming to our stages in 2016-2017!
Along with announcing the Depot main stage, Underground, Children’s Theatre, and Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) series, there was also information and applications available on the 2016-2017 Playhouse Resident Company, updated Nor Shor theatre floor plans to view, and a plethora of opportunities to become more involved with the Playhouse from part-time paid positions to volunteering!
Now, without further pause, click the’ Read More’ button to see what’s coming to our stages in 2016-2017!

Imagine a world in which you never laughed at the bawdy drinking scene from Twelfth Night. No chill up your spine when the trio of witches chants, “Double, double toil and trouble,” as they prophesy the ambitious king’s demise in Macbeth. Julius Casear might have uttered his iconic, “Friends, Romans, countrymen: lend me your ears!” but we wouldn’t know about it today.
First Folio will arrive in October and go on display for nearly a month in the Kathryn A. Martin Library at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Meanwhile, you can get your fix when the world premier Rough Magic: a theatrical celebration of Shakespeare’s First Folio is performed at The Underground April 7-9 at 7:30pm.

Ask Blake Thomas, the mastermind behind Take It With You, to sum up just what that enterprise exactly is, and he’ll tell you it’s not the easiest thing to do. “We have been trying to come up with an elevator pitch for two years, now, and we’ve come no closer to figuring out how to explain it,” Thomas says. “For the old timers, you can say it’s live radio theater, and they get it. But when they ask you what station it’s on and podcasting comes up, they’re out. It works the opposite way with younger folks. For a while, we said that it’s like A Prairie Home Companion meets Cheers. That worked okay.”
It’s been an exciting time at the theatre, and we’re happy to announce the cast list for our upcoming Underground production of Nine.
