Imagine a world in which you never laughed at the bawdy drinking scene from Twelfth Night. No chill up your spine when the trio of witches chants, “Double, double toil and trouble,” as they prophesy the ambitious king’s demise in Macbeth. Julius Casear might have uttered his iconic, “Friends, Romans, countrymen: lend me your ears!” but we wouldn’t know about it today.
First Folio will arrive in October and go on display for nearly a month in the Kathryn A. Martin Library at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Meanwhile, you can get your fix when the world premier Rough Magic: a theatrical celebration of Shakespeare’s First Folio is performed at The Underground April 7-9 at 7:30pm.
Rough Magic features scenes performed from the 18 plays that only exist because of First Folio, while also “exploring the world beneath the surface of the pages that brought these plays into existence.” The audience will get a “behind the scenes” look at Shakespeare’s words and images as they appear in First Folio, and as they are spoken by the actors.
Director Jason Scorich hopes the production will increase awareness of and curiosity about the exhibit. “Our hope is to entertain them through quality performance of the material and the engage them with the ‘under the surface’ story in a way which enhances both their understanding of Shakespeare and of the scenes themselves. I use the analogy of a beer tasting. Hopefully, knowing some of the very specific ingredients that went into making these shows will gives you a new perspective on them. Shakespeare tastes riches when you know what kind of hops he employed.”
Rough Magic promises some surprises and a little something for everybody. For devotees of the canon, there’s the language itself. For the less experiences, there are the famous lines, recognizable characters, and familiar situations — and the knowledge that these thing would not be part of our culture today is not for First Folio.
