Normally it would be the absolute kiss of death for a review to declare the audience is funnier than the cast, but that is actually one of the chief selling points of “Game Show,” the interactive theater piece directed by Lawrence Lee that opened at the Underground on Thursday night.
On opening night, Tad beat Laynie and Lauren in Round 1, Tolu bested Graham and Jack in Round 2, while Katie topped Keijo and Jenny in Round 3. Tad and Katie advanced from the speed round, and Tad took home the big prize of the night.
It turns out that the most important instruction to the contestants is to always write something down and not show a blank board. This was comedy gold because some of the answers were not just wrong, they were gloriously wrong.
What famous novel’s first line is “Chug, chug, chug. Puff, puff, puff”?
Wrong answer: “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
What 1978 movie was released in Mexico under the title “Vaselina”?
Wrong answer: “Cats.”
I have not laughed out loud that much since the Underground’s The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game in 2013.
