It turns out that you need neither to be a kid nor have a kid in tow to see Behind the Shining Star, the Trampled by Turtles fairy tale that opened at the Underground on Saturday (June 6). However, this creative and engaging show, written by director Robert Lee and Crystal Pelkey, was developed specifically for the Pre-K age group and not for TBT fans impatient for next month’s concert at Bayfront Festival Park.
As narrated by Timmy the Turtle (Jody Kujawa), Behind the Shining Star is the story of how young Lucy Gold (Cheryl Skafte) and Silver the monkey (Jonathan Manchester), meet up and set off on a series of adventures looking for treasure in the Outskirts. In the end, they discover the greatest treasure of all is true friendship.
This is not a traditional musical, where the cast actually sings the songs. Instead, the music of Trampled by Turtles serves as the soundtrack for Silver and Gold’s adventures. Other songs are referenced as names and places, and some inspire segments, such as “Jars at Home” leading to a story about jars filled with fireflies.
